CHAPTER 31

Stephen

Stephen stood in the open lot still holding the smoking gun in his hand. He was sure his bullets hadn’t hit anybody. He hoped he had pointed the gun high enough over their heads that he didn’t even come close to injuring them. He couldn’t raise the barrel any more than he did because he was certain the captain was watching him like a hawk.

He thought he might have seen Billy and his step dad standing by the rail of the boat. “I hope they saw me,” he whispered. His heart ached with longing to be with them. He thought of Lilly entangled on the ground, rutting with the man in full view of an audience and he shook his head sadly knowing he couldn’t bear to be on the other side watching her anymore. She made it impossible for him to be with his friend and his family, at least for now.

He could hear the downed soldiers moaning behind him as he gazed across the water at the ferry trudging as fast as it could go to the shore on the other side of the Mississippi River. He felt sorry for everybody involved in this awful war. He wondered if the Federal soldiers realized they could be free on the other side of the dark tributary. “Why are they giving up their lives for the government? What incentive do they have? I just don’t understand,” he murmured.

He heard a shout of triumph from across the river. Looking out at the receding ferry he smiled. Even if the men standing next to the rail hadn’t been Billy and his dad he knew that the people from the compound was on that boat. He recognized Jack’s truck and stock trailer and a few of the other vehicles still sitting in the lot around him. They were free and safe from the tyranny of the Federal government.

He smiled happily for just a second longer as he watched the ferry slide up to the bank on the other side of the Mississippi, then forced a defeated look to his face. Turning around he stomped back to the line of woods where the others had taken cover. Standing by the captain’s side he growled, “That was them. It had to be. I hope we killed them all.”

“If they were dead the boat wouldn’t be sitting on the opposite shore,” the captain grunted angrily then turning away from Stephen he shouted, “get the wounded men in the trucks and let’s get going!”

A dead soldier lay beside the captain’s foot. His shirt was torn open from the blast of a bullet and his mutilated chest cavity was a bloody mess. He was young, not much older than Stephen. “What about the dead men?” Stephen asked still looking down at the boy.

The captain looked down at the dead body and then up at Stephen with an angry glare in his eyes. “What about them?” he snorted.

“Are we taking them with us, or maybe we should bury them before we leave?”

“We don’t have time to bury them,” the captain growled.
